The tells readers notice without knowing why
Inconsistent chapter openings, first-line indents on paragraphs that should be flush, double spaces after full stops, straight quotation marks instead of curly ones, and widows and orphans stranded at page breaks.

A single type system: one body face at a readable size, generous leading, consistent margins with room for the gutter, and running heads that behave correctly on recto and verso pages.
Ebook files are a separate craft. Reflowable text needs relative sizing, real styles instead of manual spacing, and a navigable table of contents.
Where to spend and where not to
Spend on the cover and the interior typography. Skip decorative flourishes, unusual trim sizes, and anything that makes the book harder to read on a train.
